Knit Seahorse and Jellyfish Cushions

I made these as a set but they come from different patterns. They both used Caron Cakes in Zucchini Loaf. The Seahorse cushion came from In the Shallows Seahorse Cushion by Susan Cowper from Simply Knitting issue 176. The Jellyfish is the Sea Creature pattern by Zoe Halstead from Let’s Knit issue 145. Each cushion used one skein of Caron Cakes, which is pretty impressive since they are very large!

Knit Benji the Bear

This is Benji the Bear from Amanda Berry’s pattern from Simply Knitting issue 189 and the Amanda Berry Knitted Toy Collection special magazine. The original bear in the pattern is made from a soft furry like yarn.

I didn’t have a yarn like that in my stash, but I still have lots of browns so I used Loops & Threads Urban in Brown. He is a very large bear with long legs and I didn’t even use all the L&T Urban that I had. He is very cute though and was fairly easy to make. The head, body and legs were all made in once piece and the ears, arms and soles of the feet were knitted separately and sewn on.

Barnabee – knit bee completed

I recently finished stuffing and sewing all the pieces together for Barnabee the knit bee from Let’s Knit magazine issue 143 the pattern is by Val Pierce. The original pattern had Barnabee with a black cap that was sewn onto his head and the antennae was sewn on top of the cap

My Barnabee has a very long head and the cap didn’t look right so I didn’t use it and instead crocheted some hair on his head and added smaller antennae. All the other parts are the same and he is quite a big stuffy with many arms for hugging!

Barnabee was made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Yellow and Vanna’s Choice in Charcoal with some odd yarn for the wings in Aran.

Completed: Rainbow hat

I received an order last week to make a child’s rainbow hat in a light merino wool. I found the yarn at a local yarn shop and it was really hard to find orange – why is no one making orange? and worked on the hat during the weekend and this week. I a have mentioned on the blog before that I don’t like working with yarn that is too fine or working with smaller needle sizes but I was using Drops Baby Merino which is more of a sport weight. I ended up making three hats, in a very Goldilocks situation; one was too small, one was too big and finally one that was just right!

I also added earflaps which I crocheted and they look better than when I tried to pick up the stitches and knit the earflap. I also finished around the hat edging and earflaps with a contrasting colour and chained some tied to the ends of the earflaps.

It ended up not being as quick as I thought it would be and so I have not finished another project that I was hoping to but I might be able to whip it up tonight and tomorrow – I have to make a pigeon!

WIP: Knit Pineapple

This past weekend I worked on a design of my own for a knit pineapple. I have liked making other fruits and vegetables for my Food with Faces collection and a pineapple seemed like a great time try using some different stitches to create some texture. At first I started with a diamond pattern but once I had completed six rows of the pattern I couldn’t see any texture at all, the light yellow colour was not a good choice for the stitch. so I pulled the stitches out and started again this time a rib stitch that I cannot remember the name of but it is done in groups of 6 rows and every 6 rows there is a change so it creates a staggered effect. I think it turned out really well. I didn’t continue the pattern at the top and bottom for shaping but the top will be covered by leaves which I am knitting now and the bottom will not really be seen anyway.

I have been using Loops & Threads Impeccable and the rib stitch pattern I found in the Knit Stitch Guide by Rita Weiss

Look at this: Knit Whale Cushion

via Ravelry.com

I recently bought Simply Knitting magazine issue 185 and totally love this Cute Whale Cushion pattern by Amanda Berry. Amanda Berry has a toy pattern in almost every issue of Simply Knitting and her designs are consistently cute, have lovely little details and are easy to make.

I like that she makes her patterns on two needles rather than circular needles as this is my preference as well. I will actually “convert” circular patterns to two needles because I prefer it so much. Anyway, I have made an Avacado Cushion recently and have an Eggplant Cushion half done so this whale is really speaking to me! I also have lots of black yarn in my stash!

Completed: Ladybug

I completed the Ladybug from Let’s Knit Issue 140. I like how chubby and well stuffed it is! I didn’t do the felt eyes because I have found felt to be hard to sew on to my knit toys in the past. I have used felt on the owls that I have made and it was so finicky. Anyway, I am not sure that I like the eyes as they are now but I am not sure what I want to do differently so I’ll just wait.

The ladybug was made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Cranberry and Patons Canadiana in black.

Brood of Chickens

img_20160907_191406

Here are some more chickens that I have been working on for an upcoming craft fair in November. These were all made from a skein of Craft Smart Yarn. I talked about the yarn in a different post. I like the colour yellow but did not like the texture of the yarn.

I made the chickens and chicks in a number of different sizes, including a teeny one!
