Crochet Slippers

After the holidays, I had a difficult time finding my next project to really inspire me. I actually took quite a long break from making anything, which was surprising. But eventually I decided it was a good time to try some slipper patterns that I have been interested for awhile. So I dug out the magazines and found multiple patterns and got to work.

After trying out 5 different slipper patterns, I finally found one that worked for me. My problem was all my slippers turned out way too big. They were beyond giant. I did a gauge swatch, I matched the yarn, or as close a substitute as I could and changed my hook size to achieve the right tension but it was slipper after slipper that was just not working out.

I finally found success with the Something’s Afoot slipper pattern by Lena Skvagerson from Crochet! Magazine, Autumn 2018 issue. It has a granny square that forms the top of the slipper and the rest of the slipper is crocheted in one piece in the back loops. I used Paton’s Classic Wool Merino and was finally able to complete a pair that matched the sizing for a women’s 9-10! I am working on another pair in Paton’s Classic Wool in a different shade, Magnolia and once that pair is done I can move on to a new project.

Lion slippers completed

Here are the completed Lion Slippers. The pattern was by Jane Burns from Let’s Knit Issue 115. I used the pattern for the slippers but crocheted by own Lion Face. These slippers ares supposed to be a 12-24 month size which seems like a big range to me, but hopefully they will fit one of the girls.

WIP: A tale of two snowflake slippers

In my recent search for slipper patterns for children, I came across two different patterns for very similar looking slippers, both with a snowflake pattern on the toes. I am interested in making one pair of each pattern to compare them.

The first pair is from Knit Simple Magazine Fall 2016 issue which had over 15 slipper patterns.

These slippers are from the book Knit: Handmade Style. This pattern is by Diana Crossing/Minx Handknits. I was not able to find a picture of the actual pattern itself to share, in the book they are blue with a white snowflake so the similarity between the Knit Simple pattern and this one was very strong.

I look forward to starting these slippers this weekend to see how they turn out!

Sipper update

I have completed one set of slippers – these are the
Basic Chunky Slipper pattern from Patons Next Steps book worked in Loops & Threads Impeccable in Navy. I made some crochet flowers from
Bunny Kawaii Cuddler from 3amgracedesigns and sewed them to the tops of the slippers. I just need to add some fabric puff paint to the bottom of the slippers to keep them from being slippery and they are good to go.

Here are the lion slippers – not finished yet, the lions need some faces and I have to sew the lion head to the slippers but this is the general idea. Very cute!

WIP: More Knit Slippers

Via Ravelry.com

I wrote about making Lion Slippers in a previous post. I ended up crocheting my own Lion face to add to the top of the slippers. It is very large and dramatic.

I started working on another pair of slippers for another little girl – she is about 4 or 5 so I decided to make the Basic Chunky Slipper pattern from Patons Next Steps Four: Socks & Slippers – but I used a worsted weight yarn instead in order to create the child size rather than an adult size. I used Loops & Threads Impeccable in Navy and will add a flower or butterfly to the top of the slipper. I have finished both slippers and they seem child size to me – about 7 inches long – the average size for most of the slipper sizes I have found are for adult women and are over 9 inches in length. Anyway at some point the kids will have to try on the slippers and hopefully they will fit!

I’ll include some pictures of the slippers soon – I don’t often take pictures of in progress projects.

WIP Knit Slippers

I spent a lot of time this weekend looking through my magazines and books for knit slipper patterns for children. I have a friend with two little ones and they are moving to a new house with hardwood floors and I offered to make some slippers. I didn’t think this was going to be an issue since I have seen so many cute slipper patterns over the years. Apparently I have seen lots of baby slipper patterns, not as many for children. It seems like the sizing was either for 3-12 months and then jumped to adult sizing. Wither the patterns for 4 year olds? Eventually I decided to start on a pattern for Lion Slippers from Let’s Knit issue 115 (February 2017), the pattern went as high as 12-24 months so this seemed like it might work for the youngest girl, as she is about 2 years old. I have completed both slippers, now I need to work on the lion face part that will be sewn to the front of the slipper. I have not been able to find a picture of these slippers to include but they look like this:

These are crochet but they give you the general idea. I am making the slippers with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Gold which is a favourite colour of mine from this brand, I have made an octopus and other animals from it in the past.

The other slipper patterns that I found that could be good for this project include:

Textured slippers from Patons Next Steps booklet #4: Socks & Slippers.

These Loafer Slippers

from the Fall 2016 issue of Knit Simple magazine were my favourite of the over 10 slipper and sock patterns they had in that issue. Most of them were sized for adult women but if I use a different yarn or a smaller needle on the smallest size perhaps they will work well enough for a child? I will find out.
